Electronically Adjustable Suspension and Motorcycles

By Dirck J. Edge

Suspension systems on several automobiles have featured electronic adjustability for quite some time. How would you like to be able to change the damping characteristics of your motorcycle at the push of a button -- from standard to soft or sport settings, instantaneously while on the move?

We are not just talking about adjusting spring preload or air pressure, but changing damping characteristics throughout the suspension stroke, just as some automobiles currently feature. Some BMW motorcycles have a system that accomplishes this known as "ESA" (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), but it is still extremely rare in the motorcycle world. Systems light enough, and simple enough for broader motorcycle application are currently under development. Such systems may ultimately end up on motorcycles in several categories, from full-dress tourers to sportbikes.
