Gilera GP800 - Motorcycle or Scooter?

Gilera GP800 - Motorcycle or Scooter?

By Dirck J. Edge

Revealed just a few months ago in Europe, the Gilera GP800 is the fastest scooter on the planet with 75 horsepower from its 850cc twin. Is it really a scooter? The sophisticated seven-speed transmission says yes, but that is just part of the story.

The Gilera GP800 features extremely large wheels (16 inch front and 15 inch rear) for a scooter. Most full size motorcycles feature 17 inch wheels. The Gilera also has twin 320mm disc brakes up front (exceeding the braking capabilities of most motorcycles).

At close to 500 pounds, and a top speed of roughly 120 mph, the GP800 definitely has the size and performance of many true motorcycles. In this instance, the term "scooter" does not do this machine justice. At present, we have no word when this machine might be available for purchase here in the United States, or its expected MSRP.
