Windham and Carmichael Dominate Broome-Tioga AMA MX National

Kevin Windham (Honda) rode flawlessly yesterday, winning both motos in the 250cc AMA National Motocross race held at Broome-Tioga Sports Center in Binghamton, New York. More importantly, Windham gained valuable championship points on Greg Albertyn (Suzuki), whose lead going into the final round has been cut to only 21 points over Windham.

Jimmy Button (Yamaha) has obviously figured out how to ride the big Yamaha four stroke, as he finished 5/2 for second overall. Button has been on the podium frequently of late, and has probably earned himself another factory ride with Yamaha next year.

Third overall in the 250cc class went to Suzuki’s Robbie Reynard, who might be questioned by his team for passing Albertyn in the second moto, and causing Albertyn to lose valuable championship points late in the race. Reynard went 6/3 on the day.

Ricky Carmichael (Kawasaki) dominated the 125cc class, winning both motos with ease. Carmichael, who has lost some overall victories recently (and lost his chance to erase Mark Barnett’s all time record of 25 national 125 overall victories — the best Carmichael can do is tie that record at the final round), rode with a vengeance and erased any doubts as to whether he is still the fastest 125cc pilot in the states. Second in the 125cc class went to Tallon Vohland (Honda), who finished 2/3, and third went to Yamaha’s Stephane Roncada (6/2).

Carmichael gained enough points with one round remaining to clinch his third straight 125cc outdoor national championship. Although Carmichael does not need to ride the next round in the 125cc class, he will probably ride that class in order to try and tie Mark Barnett’s record. MD had speculated that Carmichael might move to the 250cc class after clinching the championship (RC would apparently like to), but it now appears that tying Barnett’s record is important to Kawasaki, and that they have asked Carmichael to ride the 125cc class at the final round of the series.
