MONSTER S4: EVOLUTION OF THE LEGEND
The Monster, which was created in 1992, is the model that reinvented the
naked motorcycle, giving it new aesthetic-visual and functional styling.
With its strong personality, it offers a valid alternative to sporting
motorcycles due to its agility, its basic nature and ability to transform
the generous performance of the Ducati 90 degree V-twin engine into powerful
acceleration from zero and exciting through-the-gears performance.
Its gutsy and sincere character continues to attract a wide and diverse
range of clients: from the gentle sex to all those who crave after
sportsbike excitement but without the extreme tucked riding position.
Due to this extraordinary personality and success, the Monster takes on a
new lease of life in 2001. It leaves behind both yesterday and todays
rivals, which had shown signs of catching up on the original design
The new Monster S4 (the name of the 2001 version) has made a quantum leap
forward in terms of all-out performance: power availability, chassis
quality, safety and pure refinement.
The new Monster S4 is a brand-new motorbike that only shares the elegant and
strong styling of the previous version.
The chassis is derived from the ST series model, while the new engine
heart just had to be the ultra-successful 916 cc desmodromic unit.
The Monster S4 has no comebacks: its performance and its thoroughbred
sporting ability are capable of guaranteeing intense excitement, even for
the most demanding riders, mixed with the out-and-out pleasure that only a
perfect symbiosis of man and machine can create.
When creating the Monster S4, Ducati engineers wanted to highlight the
technical content, the performance and the rational nature of a project that
has remained faithful to the original on a stylistic level. This can also be
seen in the clear layout of all the motorcycle components.
In order to arrive at a rational and accurate definition of every individual
design detail, advanced Unigraphics software was used for the creation of
three-dimensional computer models.
This use of the most advanced computer technology enabled accurate
structural and functional checks to be carried out, even before the first
prototype model had been built.
The Monster of the third millennium therefore remains the essential naked
bike and has gained considerably in terms of function and performance.
The Monster S4 in detail
Faithful to the style parameters of the Monster S project, carefully adapted
to the new chassis structure and engine architecture as well as its
accessories; a careful harmonization of the color tints of the mechanical
elements of the bike and a rationalization of accessories.
A five-spoke wheel design similar to that of the 996, use of carbon-fiber in
the front fairing, mudguards, side body panels, distribution belt cover and
immobilizer with transponder inserted in the key.
Two-piece handlebars fixed directly to the front fork head.
High torsion stiffness tubular chassis derived from the ST series,
incidence-adjustable steering geometry, 43 mm Showa upside-down front forks,
aluminum swinging arm, fully-adjustable Sachs shock absorber, raised
suspension, wheelbase 1440 mm, weight 193 kgs.
916 cc desmodromic engine with lowered exhaust cam, cam phasing and larger
filter box, exhaust manifolds with 40 mm diameter pipes, new lighter 5.9 M
electronic management system with CAN logic, lighter lead-gel battery.
Brembo brakes with 320 mm x 5mm front discs, P4 30-34 caliper, sinterized
pads, brake master cylinder with radial technology, steel-braided oil and
water lines, lateral side-stand with full extension lock and anti
start-up/engine ignition sensor.
