Langston Injured in Practice Crash

In the latest of a string of frustrating incidents, KTM rider Grant Langston was hurt in a practice crash April 9 and will be out indefinately, according to the following press release:

CORONA, Calif., (April 10, 2002) – Team KTM/Red Bull/Thor rider and former World GP Champion Grant Langston was injured on a triple jump yesterday at KTM’s practice track just outside Corona. Though the cause of the accident is still under investigation, Langston suffered compression bruises to his ankles and knees, rendering him unable to race this weekend at Round 13 of AMA/EA SPORTS Supercross at the Pontiac (Mich.) Silverdome.

Said Langston: “I hope nothing’s broken. But right now I can’t even walk without crutches.”

In addition, Langston was waiting on the results of an MRI today to determine if there was a fractured bone in one of his feet. Results of Tuesday’s X-rays were inconclusive.

“Since my wheel collapsed at Steel City (outdoor finals last Sept.) nothing seems to have gone right,” said Langston in disgust. “Sometimes it’s my bad judgement, but more often than not it’s been things that are out of my control.”

For instance, last week at the St. Louis supercross, Langston was involved in a serious accident when he came off a triple jump and landed on fellow competitor Larry Ward, who had stopped in Langston’s landing area while the KTM rider was airborne. The accident forced Langston out of the race.

On a positive note, Langston said he’s “Looking forward to the 125 Shoot-Out at Vegas in several weeks” and “Hopefully mixing it up with (Chad) Reed and (James) Stewart.”

But, more importantly, Langston says he’s got to be healthy for the AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship opener at Glen Helen (May 12th).

“With regard to the supercross season, I’ve had the speed all year long, won every heat race except one – with Chad Reed in a couple of those heats,” said Langston. “It’s been frustrating that I haven’t been able to transfer my speed into a win or two. Although I now believe that I am accepted as a supercross rider, my obvious strength is outdoor motocross. And for the nationals, it would be nice to get as good a start this year as I did last year when I won both Glen Helen and Hangtown.”
