Is the In-Line Four Era Ending?

More and more rumors suggest that several manufacturers are focusing on new engine configurations (new to them). Sportbike V-twins, V-4s and triples, for instance. Are in-line fours going out of style?

Certainly, the 600cc sportbike class will continue to feature in-line four-cylinder engines for years to come, but open-class bikes are likely to emulate MotoGP configurations. Currently, only Yamaha is utilizing an in-line four in MotoGP (although, Kawasaki is expected to use this engine configuation in MotoGP next year, as well).

Expect some surprises in the next two model years, including, perhaps, sportbike V-twins from both Yamaha and Kawasaki, and V-4s from both Suzuki and Honda (emulating, at least in Suzuki’s case, their MotoGP engine configuration).
