The home page of MSNBC recently featured a story on a surge in scooter sales resulting from high gas prices. As one of the most-read digital newspapers (it may be number one as far as I know), it was somewhat surprising to see this story near the top of page 1. Many two-wheeled enthusiasts never believed scooters would catch on with the American consumer, but it looks like strained pocketbooks are a big part of a surge in interest.
Getting new riders on two wheels of any sort is good for the industry. Scooter riders could certainly migrate to larger motorcycles, but the current economy may actually be moving riders to smaller, more fuel efficient bikes and scooters.
