American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Family Capitol Hill Climb press conference, featuring U.S. Representative Denny Rehberg (MT)
When: Thursday, May 26, 11:00 a.m.
Where: Rayburn House Office Building, room 2358C, Washington, D.C.
Who: Scores of families and young children who ride off-road motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) will be present to support youth riding and the passage of H.R. 412, the Kids Just Want to Ride Act, introduced by Rep. Rehberg on Jan. 25.
Why: Unless action is taken by Dec. 31, 2011, a provision of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, commonly referred to as the “lead law,” will result in the de facto ban on the sale of kid-sized dirtbikes and ATVs. The attendees represent those who will be negatively impacted by the full implementation of the CPSIA.
Special feature: The winners of the “AMA Kids Just Want to Ride! Video Contest” will also be in attendance: Erin, 11, Adi, 7, and Carter, 5, Malcolm of Littleton, Colo., accompanied by their parents Peggy and Danny. The Malcolm’s video will be featured at the event. Winning videos can be viewed at www.AmericanMotorcyclist.com/KidsJustWantToRide.aspx.
Media opportunities: Interviews with the families and kids affected by the CPSIA; many have traveled long distances to attend. Most will be dressed in off-road riding gear, and several exemplary off-highway bikes will be on display. Also available: Rep. Rehberg, members of Congress, and AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman.
