Simoncelli and Spies Fight Over Pole Position at Assen; Rossi Qualifies Way Back in 11th

Marco Simoncelli (Honda) took pole position for tomorrow’s Assen MotoGP round earlier today with Ben Spies (Yamaha) 1/100th of a second behind him. Points leader Casey Stoner (Honda) was third quickest, and will fill out the front row.

Valentino Rossi completed his first qualifying session aboard his new Ducati Desmosidici 11.1 (see our story here) in disappointing fashion – finishing in 11th position to start on the fourth row tomorrow. Spies and teammate Jorge Lorenzo (who qualified fourth) are both sporting special livery commemorating Yamaha’s 50th anniversary in Grand Prix racing (see photo).

Thanks for that Rich. Would you mind telling me the rest of the finishing positions, just so I can have absolutely nothing about the race to look forward to?

Spies won the race hours ago. And Simoncelli crashed yet again taking out Lorenzo with him.

Remember, this is a Saturday race, folks.
