Laguna Seca WSB Results

071314top-i

Aprilia dominated Race 1 at Laguna Seca earlier today with Marco Melandri taking the win just ahead of teammate Sylvain Guintoli. Defending champ Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) finished in third position a short distance behind the Aprilia duo.

While Race 1 was somewhat uneventful, Race 2 was a different story.  Stopped and restarted twice as a result of crashes, Race 2 ended up being a 7-lap sprint. Ultimately, Sykes took the win ahead of Guintoli in second and Jonathan Rea (Honda) in third.

Sykes’ points lead is now at 44. For additional details, results and points visit the official WSB site.

I think they should have Norm do the marketing.

“Get up off the couch and fork over the cash you cheap penny pinching swine.”

I don’t think you are ever going to brow beat people into paying $20 to park a motorcycle at a motorcycle event. A car? Sure. But not a motorcycle.

Other than helping out with a 2 year old at home, I would have attended this event. I went to the 4.5 days of GP last year and hopefully will go next year to SBK. I don’t care about the price for parking, etc. Its all about being a true fan and appreciating the riders.
I have the motorcycles, gear, t-shirts, autographs, etc. I plan on investing more next year for unrestricted access to amazing athletes, and hoping if the AMA exists next year, they will be at Laguna as well. The men and women of that racing series are also a great bunch of people.
Don’t whine about the price tag. Just go and enjoy the show.

I went to the race on Sunday, $60 at the gate, free parking, so I don’t know what you guys are talking about. And 49,000 fans? Hah, doubt they had 25,000 on Sunday, so hard to imagine a 3 day total that high. I thought without MotoGP at Laguna this year the “fans” would come to see the next best set of racers in the world, but sadly they/you did not.

Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Aprilla, Ducati, MV Agusta, they were all at the track, and without the usual 50,000 fans on a Sunday at the track, you could come and go as you liked, so actually it was kind of nice for those of us that went to watch.

Oddly though only 3-4 guys figured out the track on Sunday and checked out, while others seemed stuck as best of the rest, unlike most WSBK races where somebody always seems to come from mid-pack and head towards the front. Oh well, hope they come back next year, maybe people will be missing it enough by then to show up again, else I can’t imagine the track paying from them to come here much longer.

It doesn’t help that it’s broadcast on a stupid soccer channel.

I’m not paying extra to watch a handful of races followed by 23 hours of soccer.

      re: “I’m not paying”

      full stop.

    • bikerrandy says:

I pay $10 a month to watch the WSBK races as long as their running. Then I will cancel it on Dish TV. My wife get’s other extra channels she likes in the deal.

translation, i just saved $30 bucks by switching to Geico.

don’t look now, but there’s your park money. come off a tenner…? and you’d have gotten 2 days outta the deal.

The WSB at Laguna Seca had a terrible turnout because of the equally terrible promotion of the event. I saw ONE ad, weeks ago, and nothing since. Add that to the fact that neither Dorna nor WSB do any pre-race promotion in any local newspapers or radio ads, plus few, if any, of the riders are well-known in the USA outside the rabid fan base, and that adds-up to a bad gate.

SCRAMP (who control the track) and track management itself can also take some of the blame, since they seem to think that they can charge whatever they want, and the fans will happily pay and stream in. I go to that track two or three times a year, and the SWB event didn’t look a lot better than a local club event. The funny/sad part was watching the TV replay, with the poor camera operators desperately trying to find suitable “crowd shots”, with mostly empty grandstands. They were forced to keep showing the same, small group of about forty people, who happened to all be sitting in a shaded area.

In short, the racing was great, but the promotion really, REALLY sucked.

well technically she can. how many “World Superbikes at Laguna Seca” do you think we have…? some things cant be counterfeited in China and sold on Ebay.

re: “the fans will happily pay and stream in”

just the ones not looking to score “free lunch”.

      • bikerrandy says:

‘looking to score free lunch’……….You read what I said earlier why I didn’t go. You call paying $20 a day to park your MC in the infield a free lunch + the cost of a ticket? Did you go? Apparently you don’t mind getting it bent over if you did. I understand only Moto Guzzi had displays there too from someone who camped there. Apparently the big MC companies found out how few had bought tickets and didn’t bother to show up. NEVER heard of that happening @ Laguna Seca before!! Fan turnout was a bust because Gill Campbell blew it.

re: “You read what I said earlier why I didn’t go.”

yeah i read it (Lef’tant Aldo response). gave me quite the belly laugh.

re: “You call paying $20 a day to park your MC in the infield a free lunch + the cost of a ticket?”

no i call it FAAARRR cheaper than a primo seat in Minneapolis for MLB’s All-Star game.

        • Norm G. says:

          re: “Did you go?”

no, i’ve been to Laguna. this year i travelled instead to an AHRMA event to watch a friend race.

          http://tinyurl.com/oeklgvc

and guess what, when i got there i WILLINGLY paid the upcharge for VIP parking ($26.50) and didn’t whine about it. which is EXACTLY what I’m going to do next month when my travels then take me to Indianapolis for MotoGP.

  6. Rich says:

It’s a shame how few spectators were there or at any of the SBK events for that matter. I don’t see how the tracks can afford to put them on.

    • bikerrandy says:

I was going to go ……until I saw they were going to charge me $20 a day to park my bike in the infield! Used to be that was FREE. So I watched it on TV. Suspect many others did that too.

      • Norm G. says:

re: “they were going to charge me $20 a day to park my bike in the infield! Used to be that was FREE.”

ah yes i remember back in the 60’s/70’s when a gallon of gas was 45 cents, i could mail a 1st class letter for a nickel, and directory assistance, checked baggage, and television all used to be FREE. (scratchy old man voice while flipping through the pages of a FastDates calendar to verify that the year IS in fact 2014)

    • Norm G. says:

when gone am I the last of the Jedi will you be… (900 year old Jim Henson voice)

though I hear/tell vintage racing this weekend was quite the mob up.

    • Dave says:

Attendance was reported to be 49,000, up 20% from last year. The line to get in could have been handled better requiring a slow, uphill slog (clutch in, clutch out) but the racing was great, especially if you are an Aprilia fan. Parking was $10, but free would be good!

      • Norm G. says:

        re: “Parking was $10”

randy says it was $20, so which is it…?

        re: “free would be good!”

hack off your nose much…? free would be BAD.

free is but an irrational consumer desire triggered by individual selfishness. a selfishness so STRONG that it ultimately BLINDS them to the big picture.

        what big picture Norm…?

the big picture that states in micro economies, all things are connected and dependent on the CIRCULAR flow of cash, no different than in macro economies.

      • bikerrandy says:

I was willing to pay $10 for infield parking but the website to order tickets said $20. Stupid me, I didn’t bother to ask if the website was accurate. They’re loss.

    • Norm G. says:

re: “I don’t see how the tracks can afford to put them on.”

this, because have better than 20/20 vision in both eyes.

The injuries/red flag stops got really tiresome…..but the final 7 lap shootout was
AWESOME !!! Never seen Sykes so happy and vocal before today. You’d think he won the LOTTERY ! 8^ 0
