Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Moves on to Misano

Movistar Yamaha 090915

After a strong win at a soaking Silverstone a fortnight ago, the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team eagerly heads to Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for more racing action at Sunday’s ‘Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini’.

The Italian based Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team looks forward to arriving at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for what can be considered their second home race of the season.

Nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi perfectly mastered the rain conditions at Silverstone two weeks ago and arrives at his home GP leading the championship by 12 points. He has yet to finish off the podium this year and is up for the challenge of repeating his sensational victory from last year in San Marino this weekend. In previous years the Doctor has stood on the podium at this track several times, scoring two premier class MotoGP victories in 2008 and 2009, a third place in 2010 and second place in 2012.

Teammate Jorge Lorenzo had a more challenging outing on English soil and is hungry to return to the podium as he chases his teammate in the title challenge. The Majorcan is known to be strong in San Marino and has stood on top of the podium every year since the track was added to the MotoGP calendar in 2007. He has three wins in the MotoGP premier class at this circuit in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and has taken four second-place finishes in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2014.

The race in Misano is a race fans’ favourite, not only because of its fast and flowing layout, but also because of its location. As the track is just 20 minutes down the road from Rossi’s home in Tavullia, many fans make a small pilgrimage before the race forming a river of yellow streaming towards the 4.2 km long track.

The circuit can hold a maximum capacity of 60,000 spectators, who can see the riders travel clockwise since a radical renovation took place before 2007 to meet MotoGP’s safety regulations. During the upgrade the circuit was also enhanced with a new pit lane and a new chicane. These improvements not only made the track safer, but also increase the race excitement as the numerous fast corners give many overtaking possibilities.

“We now arrive in Misano and there will be a lot of pressure on me, especially from the fans, friends and family that are coming, but I like this track a lot. There is always a great atmosphere in Misano and it’s really my home race, because the track is only 10km away from Tavullia. Last year I rode a great race, but at the same time Jorge is also very fast there, so it will be another great fight. I’ll have to manage the situation in the right way. It will be difficult, but the most important thing is that this is a place where I’m able to go fast and where Yamaha is usually very strong.”

Jorge Lorenzo

Championship: 2nd, 224 points

“Silverstone didn’t go as we expected due to the weather conditions. We tried all we could to stay on the podium but unfortunately we couldn’t get the pace to stay in front and finally we had some problems beyond our control, prohibiting us to keep up the fight until the end as well. Now I’m focused on the race at Misano because it’s a special track for us and for Yamaha. I know Valentino will feel good because it’s his home Grand Prix, but in the past I’ve always been quite fast there and achieved several victories so let’s see what happens. My teammate has a gap of 12 points in the championship but there are still six races left so there are still enough points up for grabs. I’m going to push to the maximum in every race starting in Misano.”

Massimo Meregalli – Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team Director

“Now we’re heading to San Marino, which is sort of our second home Grand Prix. We are happy to leave the challenging conditions of Silverstone behind us and arrive at Misano with the same confident mood as we had at all races. Vale and Jorge are both in great physical shape and have a very competitive level at this track. The team has also done a great job at every race so far and is working very well. Yamaha has scored four consecutive victories at Misano in the last four years, so we feel greatly motivated to add more top results to the list this weekend and we look forward to start working on Friday.”

Misano challenge imminent for confident Tech3 duo

The meandering 4.2 kilometre Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli is the next round for the Monster Yamaha Tech3 team mates Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro who will both intend to power to glory as the leading satellite bikes under the Italian sun. Having endured a challenging and wet Silverstone weekend, the two riders head to the GP of San Marino full of optimism and ready for the fight at the 13th event of the 2015 MotoGP World Championship. The circuit, which features six left and ten right corners, has held some highly exciting battles in the past and will offer the perfect conditions for another entertaining spectacle this weekend with the track having been resurfaced earlier in the year.

Bradley Smith will be seeking to extend his impressive run by following up his hard fought 7th place result at his home Grand Prix with another competitive showing at Misano in order to stretch his record of completing every race no lower than 8th this season. The 24 year old British rider is currently leading the satellite MotoGP standings and will intend to consolidate his points tally by meeting the chequered flag inside the top six. Meanwhile Pol Espargaro will aim to fight as close as possible with the leading factory MotoGP bikes in the 28 lap sprint on Sunday and he will seek to close the weekend with a solid result aboard the Yamaha YZR-M1. The Spaniard was unfortunate to fall at the wet British Grand Prix after undertaking a notable start but will look to make amends instantly in San Marino as he fully intends to soar across the finish line as the leading satellite bike.

Bradley Smith

Championship: 6th, 115 points

“Next up for the MotoGP paddock is Misano, which is a GP that I always really enjoy riding at and I am certain that we can conclude the weekend positively on Sunday. It was a bit of a tough race at Silverstone, but I gave my absolute all for my home fans and overall the finish was not too bad, plus the experience certainly has raised my confidence with riding in the wet. In the past, I have scored a few podiums at Misano in the 125cc class so I have some happy memories and these will spur me on to get a good result. Plus, I am only five points from Dovizioso in the championship standings, which makes me even more determined to push hard. The track has recently been resurfaced which is positive, yet we will start with a slight disadvantage as Ducati and a few other teams tested there recently. However, we will take everything step by step in order to clinch a solid grid position on Saturday after working on the best possible setup for Sunday as I want to be able to do a top job.”

Pol Espargaro

Championship: 9th, 81 points

“It’s time to head to San Marino for the 13th round of the 2015 MotoGP world championship and I am confident as well as excited about throwing my leg over the Yamaha and getting things underway there. The track is one that I like as it suits the style of the M1 which was strong there last year. In addition, I have had some competitive performances in the past, including winning the Moto2 race from pole in 2013. This motivates me highly for the weekend and I am fired up and ready to fight. We certainly made some steps forward at the previous GP and despite the unfortunate DNF, I am sure we can carry the positives over to San Marino. I will definitely try my very best as I aim to get into the top six and beat my teammate. I can’t wait to get the show on the road and make the Italian fans cheer!”

Forward Racing looking for redemption at Misano home race

It will be an all-in weekend for the rider of the Forward Racing team this weekend in Misano during the Grand Prix of San Marino and Riviera di Rimini.

After the uphill race in Silverstone, it’s redemption-time for Loris Baz and Claudio Corti in front of the Italian fans. The Frenchman, Open pole-man in England, is aiming to fight with the quickest Open bikes to shorten the distance from the top of the standing. Claudio Corti is happy to race in front of his home crowd and he showed in England he is getting closer to his opponents.

Loris Baz

Championship: 17th, 15 points

“I’m going to Misano motivated to bounce back on top after Silverstone. I struggled to find the right confidence on the wet in the UK; I did not score any point even if I finished the race. This is our home-race and we are very motivated.”

Claudio Corti

Championship: –

“I am happy to be racing with the team at Misano in front of all the Italian fans: it will be a great experience as always. I made big steps forward with the setup of the bike in Silverstone but unfortunately during the race the weather was not on our side. I’m really motivated for Misano.”
