This Week in Monster Energy Supercross: Round 12 in Detroit, MI

450SX Class

  • History on His Side: Eli Tomac reached a new career achievement in winning his third straight Main Event last weekend. Not since 1992 with Damon Bradshaw has the first rider to win three straight races failed to win the title. Only four times in history has more than one rider won three in a row in a season.
  • Coming on Strong: Since facing a season-high deficit of 29 points to Ryan Dungey after Round 6, Tomac has outscored the champ by 17 points over the past five races, winning four times with a runner-up finish. He’s now just 12 points out of the lead.
  • Losing Ground: By his unprecedented standards, Dungey’s consistency has taken a hit the past five races with just one win and one finish off the podium. His average finish is still an incredible 2.6 over that stretch, but he’s been unable to match Tomac’s even better 1.3 average.
  • Still Leading the Way: Despite having his points lead chipped away, Dungey is still the most consistent rider in the championship with nine podium finishes and a class-leading finishing average of 2.5. However, his two wins is the lowest up to this point in the season since 2014 when he recorded just one victory.
  • El Chupacabra Rises: Blake Baggett became the seventh different rider to lead multiple laps this season, adding to his breakout 2017 in which he’s also transferred out of the Heat Race and into the Main Event more than any other rider in the division (10 times).
  • A Record Pace: The 450SX Class Main Event in Indy featured a record 27 laps, surpassing the previous record of 26 set consecutively in Arlington and Minneapolis. Tomac led 25 of the 27 laps, leaving him one lap shy of tying the record mark set by Marvin Musquin when he led every lap in Arlington.

Eastern Regional 250SX Class

  • Back with a Bang: After failing to finish off the podium for the first time in 2017 and seeing his points lead dip to single digits, Zach Osborne rebounded with his third win in five races, bringing his championship advantage to nine points.
  • Hard-Earned Success: In each of his three wins thus far Osborne has had to make a pass for the lead, with a best start of second coming in Indy. He’s led just 35 of the 89 laps completed this season (39%).
  • Oh So Close: Since taking a dominant win at the opening round of the Eastern Regional Championship Joey Savatgy has been out front in each of the last three Main Events, but has been forced to settle for a pair of runner-up finishes in addition to a season-worst sixth-place finish.
  • Uncharted Territory: For the second time in history the 250SX Class reached the 20-lap mark in a Main Event. This is the highest number of laps ever recorded in the division and equals the previous lap count their 450SX Class counterparts contested in Main Events prior to 2017.
