Clear Channel Flexes Its Muscle

by Dirck Edge

In the last couple of days, Clear Channel has announced long-term, exclusive contracts with Anaheim Stadium (three years) and Bank One Ballpark of Phoenix (five years) for the promotion of motorsports events. In other words, the only supercross you are going to see in Phoenix or Anaheim in the near future is supercross promoted by Clear Channel. After 2002, this won't be "AMA Supercross". As we have reported earlier, JamSports will be promoting AMA Supercross beginning in the year 2003 (at least, this is the AMA's announced intention -- things could possibly change).

As we also reported earlier (see our article dated November 13, 2001), it is exclusive agreements like these that have given Clear Channel such strong bargaining power in its relationship with the AMA and possibly led to the breakup of that relationship.
