MORGANTOWN, W.V. (June 1, 2010) – After enjoying the Memorial Day holiday at home with family and friends, the stars of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship return to action this weekend for round two of the 2010 season and the Flagstar Bank Freestone National from Freestone Raceway in Wortham, Texas. With a win under their belts and the points lead in their favor, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Chad Reed and GEICO Powersports Honda’s Eli Tomac look to maintain the momentum they garnered at Hangtown.

Reed kicked-off his defense of the premier 450 Class championship in impressive fashion, dominating the opening moto and riding to a strong third place finish in moto two, showing no ill effects of sitting out the majority of the supercross season. Jagermeister KTM’s Mike Alessi was also at the front of the field at Hangtown, highlighted by a convincing moto two victory, and currently sits second in the standings. Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps, who rounded out the opening round podium, holds onto third in the standings after posting 3-2 moto results.

 

The depth of the 250 Class field was evident at Hangtown as several different riders challenged for their spot on the podium. In the end, Tomac made history by becoming the first rider ever to win his professional debut, posting a third place finish in the first moto and capping off his inaugural event with a moto two victory that sealed the overall win. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Christophe Pourcel shares the class points lead with Tomac after a runner-up effort at the opening round in which he won the first moto and finished third in moto two. While his day got off to a tough start with a seventh place finish in the opening moto, GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard finished the day strong by finishing behind his teammate in second in moto two, grabbing the final spot on the podium and third place in the standings.

 

In addition to the action of the men’s classes, the MotorcycleUSA.com Women’s Motocross Championship also hosts its second round of the 2010 season in Texas. DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha’s Jessica Patterson dominated the WMX season opener, sweeping the day’s motos in a perfect 1-1 outing. Reigning champion Ashley Fiolek missed out on capturing the opening round for the first time in her young career, but still holds onto the second in the standings aboard her Honda Red Bull Racing machine after posting 3-2 moto results. Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Tarah Gieger was impressive in her debut for the team, going 2-6 in the day’s motos to hold down third place.

 

Last season at the Flagstar Bank Freestone National, Alessi was the rider to beat, putting forth a pair of stellar performances en route to sweeping both motos on the day. In the 250 Class, Pourcel and Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey traded moto wins and runner-up results to finish tied in points for the event. Dungey edged out his rival for the overall win by virtue of winning the second moto. In WMX class action, Fiolek was the class of the field, capturing the win in both motos to take her third win of the 2009 season.

Freestone Raceway is one of the most challenging tracks on the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship schedule. Track promoter Tony Miller is always looking for ways to put the planet’s top riders to the test and this season will be no different. As always, the ever-changing sand whoops affectionately known as the 12-pack will separate the top riders from their peers and the combination of high speed along with a variety of technically challenging sections will create some of the most competitive racing fans will see all season.
