Mugello MotoGP Qualifying Results; Marc Marquez Scheduled for New Surgery

Very tricky conditions today at Mugello, alternating between wet and dry, resulted in some surprising qualifying results for tomorrow’s MotoGP race. Fabio Di Giannantonio led a Ducati sweep of the top five places on the grid. Earning his first podium in MotoGP, Di Giannantonio will line up next to the Ducatis of Marco Bezzecchi and Luca Marini. Championship points leader Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) was the quickest non-Ducati, and he will line up in the sixth spot tomorrow (the outside of row 2).

Marc Marquez had a heavy crash during Q2, and later held a press conference announcing that he would receive a fourth surgery on his right arm next Tuesday at the Mayo Clinic in the United States. Marquez will race tomorrow, but may miss the entire remainder of the 2022 series.

For full results of today’s qualifying, take a look here. You can find additional details on the MotoGP site. Stay tuned for MD’s race report tomorrow.

Another surgery, and another season off. Not good. If he can actually return to form and be competitive after this, it would be nothing short of amazing. It’s just difficult to see it playing out that way.

Everyone goes back to that crash that broke his arm, but those kind of crashes aren’t uncommon and don’t often ruin careers. The real problem was him coming back to race immediately with his bone screwed together under the illusion he was fit to race. Marc has to think about that one decision often.

Mayo is huge and has some of the most talented and compassionate doctors and staff. If you have a big problem and you can get in, go. Met a guy in the waiting room that fell 4 floors down an elevator shaft. His home town doctor told him to get his affairs in order, he had less than 90 days… so he fired him. That was over 3 years earlier. The Mayo docs performed many surgeries to put him back together. Good luck Mark, I admire his courage.

  3. Marcus says:

It’s high time for Marquez to pay the band. I’m not sad.

    • TimC says:

He should not have returned so fast on that arm. I’d be really curious how much of that was him and how much was Honda. It’s hard to say, they are both “results oriented.”

  4. Mick says:

Mayo is an interesting place. They have global competitive pricing and world class care. They do hose people in imagery. They trust no imagery not made on site.

Whatever, they rock. And if they ran the US Healthcare system. It would cost one trillion less annually and be Mayo clinic level care. Heck of a deal.

Rochester is kind of a dull town though, to be honest.

  5. JC says:

I like Quartararo and hope he continues to do well. It’s nice to see the diversity in winning brands though. Lately, any brand can win any given week.

I hope Marquez can come back strong.

    • Dave says:

Agreed but that diversity is slipping away this year. Ducati have won 4 of the 7 races this year and occupy the top-5 qualifying positions this weekend at Mugello. What is most remarkable about this weekend is that the top-3 are normally among Ducati’s 3 least successful riders currently occupying 22nd, 18th, and 16th in the overall standings, showing that every bike they’re fielding is win-capable. Put in perspective, Tech-3 campaigned Yamahas for 20 years without ever winning a race, despite the Yamaha winning numerous races and titles under factory riders in that time.

      • Mick says:

Looks like the fast guys all had a failed qualifying strategy and whoever was out during the short time that the track was good got the fast times.

I suspect that there may be some crashing going on early in the race.

        • JC says:

Good race. Bagnaia is a fast rider. The track condition was better today and the fast guys were very fast.

Truth be told, I’d like to see the VR46 team win, but I love the competition. Like Dave said. Every bike is win capable. A lot of riders are too.

        • Dave says:

There were crashes but not who you were probably thinking. 2 of the three on the front row finished in the top 6, about 4 seconds off of the winner. Pretty amazing performances from both of them.
