2002 Gilera Supersport: Japanese Heart and Italian Soul

Gilera is an historic Italian marque owned by the well-funded Piaggio group. It is being resurrected quickly by Piaggio, and this is the first model. The 2002 Gilera 600 Supersport features sleak Italian styling, top-shelf components, and a Suzuki GSX-R600 engine.

With things like Brembo brakes, Akropovic exhaust and upside-down forks, the Gilera intends to feature things most 600s lack in stock form, but many customers desire.

The GSX-R motor is the most powerful motor available in the 600 class, and is a new design, featured on last year’s brand-new GSX-R600. With the Akropovic exhaust, and slightly different tuning, the Gilera should be the fastest stock 600 available. With titanium reinforcements in the frame, and other weight saving measures, the Gilera should be roughly four pounds lighter than the GSX-R600, the lightest 600 currently available.

No word yet on price or expected availability in the United States. Stay tuned.
