Not too long ago, you could count on BMW engines, their “boxers” and “bricks”, remaining relatively unchanged for a decade, or so. The same thing could be said for their bikes, in general. Long product cycles.
German automobiles had to shorten their product cycles to keep pace with the competition, principally, the Japanese. It seems that BMW Motorcycles is facing up to the same reality, and that we will see more frequent, dramatic changes in their models in the future. The more modern, and refined, boxer twin found in the recently announced 1200GS, and the high tech, in-line four expected in the new supersport model (displacing approximately 1300cc) will find their way into several new, or significantly revised bikes over the next few years.
This quickening pace of development at BMW can only be good for BMW enthusiasts, and motorcycling enthusiasts, in general.
