The AMA 125cc Outdoor National Motocross series has always been won by a 125cc two-stroke, despite the eligibility of 250cc four-strokes for the last several years. Indeed, 250cc four-strokes have struggled against the 125s outdoors. Will that change in 2004?
Obviously, with James Stewart (Kawasaki) planning to race a 125cc two-stroke, you can pretty much bank on the champion being aboard a two-stroke this year, as well. One of the other strong riders in the class, Ryan Hughes (KTM), will also be on a 125cc two-stroke (KTM will not race their 250cc four-stroke until next year here in the States).
Unlike prior years, you should see plenty of four-strokes on the podium this year. Perhaps, not on the top step, however.
