Boxer Power

Information is coming out regarding BMW’s revised Boxer twin. The new motor should displace 1200cc, and appear initially in the GS adventurer tourer model. Expect to see the bike next year, followed by the appearance of this same new engine in other BMW Boxer models.

Essentially, all new, the 1200cc twin should revert back to a single-spark-plug-per-cylinder design (the older Boxer twin was fitted with twin-plugs last year). The new twin will contribute to significantly increased performance in two ways, including, more power and lighter weight. Indeed, the new engine could be as much as 40 pounds lighter than the current twin, and make close to 20% more peak horsepower.

Power will reach the rear wheel through a new six-speed transmission and a revised version of BMW’s Paralever rear suspension/shaft drive system.

Basically, we are looking at a BMW Boxer with horsepower to rival the modern, liquid-cooled v-twins produced by Suzuki and Honda for their own adventure touring machines, the V-Strom and the Varadero, with significantly more torque, as well.
