The opening round of the 2006 AMA Motocross series was held in Sacramento, California earlier today. In the Motocross class, James Stewart (1/2 – Kawasaki) ended a long winning streak by Ricky Carmichael (Suzuki). Carmichael failed to win the overall today for the first time in more than 2 years. Carmichael finished 3/1 on the day after crashing in the first corner of the first moto. Chad Reed (Yamaha) finished 2/3 for third overall.
In the Motocross Lites division, Mike Alessi (KTM) dominated both motos (1/1) for the overall win ahead of Bret Metcalfe (5/2 – Yamaha) and Andrew McFarlane (4/3 – Yamaha).
Obviously, Stewart and Alessi lead the points race in their respective classes after the first round. For additional details, results and points, visit the official AMA Motocross site here
