Just a few weeks ago, it looked like Chad Reed was on cruise control . . . about to win his second Monster Energy AMA Supercross title without any serious challenges. Through the first seven rounds of the series, Reed’s worst finish was second place (and he had five wins). In the last four races, however, Reed has had a win, a sixth place and two seventh place finishes. Crashes, illness and bad luck (a stalled bike at the muddy Daytona race) account for the recent performances, but the points are getting uncomfortably close.
Kevin Windham (Honda) has pulled within 17 points of Reed’s series lead, and there are still eight races left — anything could happen. It should be said, however, that when all goes smoothly for Reed, he is still clearly the fastest guy on the track. He still has to be the favorite, but Windham could make it close.
