Redesigned 2013 Yamaha XJ6/Diversion F Revealed to European Market (updated)

In the U.S., the Yamaha FZ6R was introduced as a 2009 model (which we tested here), and continues in the 2012 U.S. line-up as a practical, fun, budget 600.  For 2013, we expect Yamaha to introduce the changes just announced in Europe for the similar XJ6/Diversion F (naked/faired versions) models (only the faired version has been available in the U.S.), which include:

Changes for 2013

  • New-shape passenger grab bars
  • Uprated instruments with LED backlighting
  • New skin on seat cover
  • Clear turn signal lenses
  • Black accents on fuel tank cap
  • Chain adjuster internal position indicator

Nothing too exciting, perhaps, although the new instrument panel looks to be an improvement in terms of contrast and legibility.  No word yet from Yamaha here in the States, but these same changes would likely appear on the new U.S. model.

I really was anxious to see on of the current models, and finally ran across one at a dealer where I could ‘try one on’ and liked it except . . . . it was the plainest all-white paint job with a small ‘Yamaha’ graphic in red. Dull . . . . until it dawned on me that this was a terrific white primer which would accept a blue racing or red/black Anniversary livery right on top of it. Yeah !

Wow, looking up the specs this thing is pretty identical to my ’82 XJ650RJ Seca. It does have 4 more HP but it doesn’t have the maintenance free benefit of shaft drive like the Seca. Hopefully something improved after all these years.

I know…..with shaft drive I would consider this bike very seriously. Fuel Injection, 26,000 mi. valve adj. interval, what more could you want, right?

Just removed that whole rear fender/bracket assembly and fab one out of sheet aluminum. It’ll look a lot better and be more functional, too!

Do I see a centerstand lurking underneath this new version? I hope they come to the U.S. that way…..

Jeez, I’ve been suggesting that my GF upgrade to an FZ6R for a couple of years now (I have an FZ6 but not only are those no longer available new, I think the 6R is probably more real-world usable) – and I NEVER noticed it does not have a centerstand – aftermarket $150!

So hope you’re listening Yamaha, this would be a great addition to the model. I’ll never buy a bike without one (or that can’t be fitted with one if the exact bike I otherwise wanted didn’t have it), and having to go to the aftermarket really shouldn’t be necessary.

THAT SAID GET A DIFFERENT HUMAN-VERIFICATION SYSTEM. HAVING TO CLICK THRU 20+ TIMES TO GET SOMETHING YOU -HOPE- YOU CAN READ RIGHT GOT OLD A LONG TIME AGO.

ESPECIALLY WHEN IT TURNS OUT YOU DIDN’T GET IT RIGHT, TRY AGAIN, THEN IT ERRORS SAYING YOU DIDN’T TYPE A COMMENT!!!!!!!!!! Luckily I already know to use Notepad BECAUSE THIS SYSTEM SUCKS YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice if there was a gear position indicator.

Also a proper rear fender. The plastic ones shake and flap constantly. I have a wrx and the license plate is literally falling apart because of road vibration.

If that fairing would fit the FZ1 – that would look sweet, I would buy one….

There is something startrekky about that seat.

I almost bought an FJ6R this year, but I got an irresistable deal on a Versys instead. I’m still very fond of this bike, and from all accounts it appears to be a great, value priced all around motorcycle. Maybe the improvements aren’t so dramatic, but hopefully it’ll help keep the price down and keep the bike in the lineup for the time being. There seems to be a decent market for a bike that’ll handle commuting, light touring, and a bit of spirited riding at an affordable price.
