American Motorcyclist Association urges extra travel caution during Labor Day weekend

PICKERINGTON, Ohio – The American Motorcyclist Association wishes everyone a great Labor Day holiday and asks all motorists to drive safely and extend extra courtesy — especially to motorcyclists — during the Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-5.

“Many people view Labor Day as the end of summer and plan big events or outings to close out the season,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “So, they may be in more of a rush to get to their destinations. They may be distracted by kids in the car, smartphones or just the anticipation of day’s events.

“We urge everyone on the roads this weekend to use extra caution,” Dingman said. “Drive sober, avoid distractions, and take an extra look before making a turn or changing lanes. And, please, be alert for motorcyclists. The smallest precaution could be the one that prevents a crash.”

To help ensure a safe holiday, the AMA recommends that car and truck drivers:

  • Keep a close eye out for the increased number of motorcyclists on the roads
  • Keep the driver’s area distraction-free
  • Leave early to avoid the temptation to speed
  • Designate a non-drinking driver or plan for alternative transportation

Motorcyclists are encouraged to:

  • Take more frequent breaks to remain rested and alert
  • Minimize onboard distractions, such as music players and other gadgets
  • Never ride while impaired
  • Provide an extra safety cushion of space between your bike and the vehicle you are following
  • Wear the proper protective gear

“We want everyone to arrive safely at their destination, so they can fully enjoy this holiday weekend,” Dingman said. “Taking a little extra time and a little extra care can contribute to a significantly safer experience.”
