This Week in Monster Energy Supercross: Round 4 in Glendale, AZ

Round 4:  University of Phoenix Stadium
Phoenix, Arizona
January 28, 2017

450SX Class

  • King of Consistency: With his 32nd career win in Anaheim, Ryan Dungey not only took over the points lead, but also positioned himself as the most consistent rider of all time. Dungey now owns the highest percentage of top-10 (98.3%), top-five (90%), and podium finishes (75.8%) in history.
  • Heartbreak: After arguably the most dominant and promising start of his career, Ken Roczen will likely be forced to miss his largest amount of races since making the overseas move to compete on U.S. soil.
  • Rare Feat: Despite all the success of its riders since introducing multiple entries in the 450SX Class in 2014, Anaheim marked just the third-ever 1-2 finish for the Factory KTM effort.
  • Breakout Performance: After a slow start to the season in which he finished 10th and 14th, rookie Cooper Webb enjoyed a breakthrough outing in Anaheim, with his best qualifying effort (3rd), Heat Race performance (4th), and Main Event result (4th). He also grabbed his first career holeshot in the Main Event.
  • Deeper Than Ever: The historic depth of talent in the 450SX Class field has seen 13 different riders earn a top 10 finish through three rounds. Additionally, a total of 13 riders have already earned a coveted Main Event transfer out of the Heat Races.
  • Big Debut: Rookie Malcolm Stewart made his anticipated 2017 debut in Anaheim. He made his presence felt by qualifying 10th, while also earning a Main Event transfer in his Heat Race by finishing second. He finished 18th in the Main Event following misfortune late in the race.

Western Regional 250SX Class

  • Deja Vu: After narrowly missing out on the win in San Diego, Justin Hill was dominant in Anaheim, leading the entire Main Event. His 5-2-1 results to start the year are identical to his finishes to start the Eastern Regional Championship last season.
  • It’s All in the Start: Shane McElrath’s two wins and three straight podiums are a direct result of his class-leading starting average. Even if he hasn’t been up front, McElrath has consistently been able to improve his position by an average of 1.7 spots a race.
  • Knocking on the Door: Aaron Plessinger sits in elite company with McElrath as the only two riders in the championship with podium results at every round. He’s still in search of his first win of the season but is coming off his best all around outing of the season in Anaheim.
  • Looking for a Break: Despite being one of the fastest riders in the division, Jeremy Martin cannot catch a break in the Main Event. He’s started outside the top 10 at each round, and outside the top 20 the past two weeks. He still boasts an average finish of 7.7, passing an average of more than 10 riders a race.
