Odd that they take July off. The whole rest of Europe takes August off. Wise move in my opinion. Vacation while the masses are still working.

I found some places to mountain bike in Parc de Saint-Cloud, site of the first ever bicycle race. So I rode there often. That involves crossing the river, there is a foot bridge right next to Longchamp, and riding up a big hill. From the hill there is a nice overlook. I took bike riding visitors there all the time. During any other part of the year, the air was too smoggy most of the time to see Sacré Coeur, a basilica on another big hill across the valley that Paris is in. During the entire month of August so many people had left town that you could see Sacré Coeur clearly every day that wasn’t foggy or had some other sort of visibility reducing weather.

So many people leave in August that Paris mandates that at least one bakery in every area is open every day. So the bakeries work together to make that happen. You have to familiarize yourself with who is going to be open on what day or you end up doing some extra walking to fetch up a fresh baguette. The really small bakeries with limited capacity close for the whole month.
