Kawasaki has announced their 2004 new models, including a huge, 2,053cc v-twin cruiser known as the Vulcan 2000, the ZX-10R supersport, and, for Europe only, the Z750 Naked. These models are discussed below in press material obtained from Kawasaki in Europe. Note, also, that Kawasaki has revised the Vulcan Mean Streak by, among other things, increasing its displacement to 1552cc, and there are numerous changes to the ZX-6RR for 2004. These latter two models are not discussed below. Additional information on these two models will be provided at a later date.
The big news is the Vulcan 2000, with the largest displacement production v-twin in history. Take a look at the following materials for details on this model, the ZX-10R and the Z750.
MODEL CONCEPT
In the cruiser category bigger is definitely better, and the super-macho new
Vulcan 2000 is the largest displacement V-Twin in the world. This
high-powered flagship machine is unlike anything in the cruiser category and
completely redefines Kawasaki’s brand DNA in this important market.
Complementing the engine’s massive size and impressive power output is an
attractive style that mixes modern and traditional design elements in a
streamlined, highly integrated package. Centrepiece of the Vulcan 2000’s
remarkable styling is the streamlined headlight nacelle enclosing a
“gatling” projector-beam headlamp.
Engine displacement is an incredible 2,053 cc, making the Vulcan 2000 the
largest displacement production V-Twin in history. Not only does this
muscular power plant produce massive amounts of torque and horsepower, it is
also one of the best-looking VTwin engines in the world, with the huge
gracefully tapered cylinders attractively accentuated by the long pushrod
tubes and curvaceous engine covers.
The “stretched” low-and-long chassis is just as impressive. As the top model
in Kawasaki’s cruiser line-up, every detail expresses the high quality,
superb comfort and feeling of trustworthiness customers expect from a
flagship machine.
The VN2000’s key features can be summarised as follows:
- World’s Largest V-Twin Engine – As good looking as it is powerful and
smooth, the liquid-cooled, OHV, 2,053 cc V-Twin engine splays its
attractively tapered cylinders at 52 degrees. This massive power plant is
equipped with an automotive-style fuel injection system and produces
category-shattering levels of torque and an incredible power feel,
out-accelerating competing cruisers with ease. In addition to the
stimulating aural sensation from the twin slash-cut mufflers, the Vulcan
2000’s engine produces a feel-good V-Twin heartbeat unmatched by any other
cruiser on the market today. - Styling That Demands Respect – The Vulcan 2000’s masculine styling
with stretched fuel tank and thin, tank-mounted speedometer redefines the
classic cruiser image while still remaining true to the cruiser tradition.
This concept is also carried through to the rear frame, which looks like a
custom rigid but is actually a modern single-shock layout. - Confident Handling and Luxurious Ride Quality – Whether manoeuvring at
low speeds in a parking area or cruising down the highway, the Vulcan 2000’s
low seat height, quiet belt drive and huge 200 mm rear tyre give riders an
unmatched feeling of confidence and stability.
WORLD’S LARGEST V-TWIN ENGINE
Engine
- Liquid-cooled, OHV, 8-valve, 2,053 cc V-Twin engine has a massive bore
and stroke of 103 x 123.2 mm. - Huge 46 mm throttle bodies fitted with dual throttle valves ensure
massive torque output in the low- and medium rpm ranges and contribute to a
silky smooth powerband. - The use of dual throttle valves – a primary throttle valve directly
operated by the rider and a sub-valve operated by electric motor – mitigates
sudden torque increases and smoothes out the power delivery. - Automotive-type fine-atomising injectors improve performance, fuel
economy and emissions. (While fuel spray from conventional injectors has a
droplet size of 120 microns, the fine atomising injectors have a droplet
size of approximately 70 microns.) - 4-valve heads use centrally located iridium plugs fired by
high-voltage coils for high combustion efficiency. - Twin chain-driven cams operate the pushrods that run along the
exterior of the cylinders on the right side of the engine. - Hidden oil lines to the cylinder head balance the appearance of the
left side of the engine. - Lightweight forged “slipper” pistons, similar to those found in
high-performance engines, with short skirts help reduce vibration.
Compression ratio is 9.5:1. - Dual primary balancers harmonise primary vibration. Secondary
vibration is minimised with the lightweight pistons and rods while the good
vibrations are left for the rider to enjoy. - A rugged 5-speed transmission delivers the reliability needed for
Vulcan 2000’s massive torque output. A gear position sensor signals the ECU,
ensuring that ignition timing and fuel supply is ideal for the chosen gear
and speed range. - Belt final drive is quiet and efficient. Wide belt is very durable.
STYLING THAT DEMANDS RESPECT
Engine
- Following the overall design of the Vulcan 2000, the engine’s
dimensions are also long and low. Although stroke is 33 mm longer than that
of the VN1500 engines, the Vulcan 2000 power plant is only 2 mm taller. - The crankcase’s “wrinkle black” coating juxtaposes nicely with the
many chromed engine covers. - Dual slash-cut mufflers are joined with two balance pipes for high
efficiency and a great sound. The high-quality chrome finish looks superb.
Headlamp & Tail Light
- The Vulcan 2000’s signature feature is the stunning streamlined
headlight nacelle housing a “gatling” projector-beam headlamp. A
conventional bulb located below the three projector lamps is used for the
high beam. - Compared to a standard reflector-type headlamp, the triple-projector
beam offers more evenly distributed illumination, for greater confidence
when riding at night. - When the high beam is on, all four lighting elements are illuminated
for increased brightness. - Large, single-bulb tail lamp uses a bright, Fiflex reflector for high
visibility. Screwless attachment further enhances the high quality of the
beautifully shaped lens.
Fuel Tank
- Big, stretched and seamless, the voluptuous fuel tank has the design
and finish customers expect of a flagship machine. - Large 21-litre (5.5 gal.) capacity for worry-free long-distance
cruising. - Step-motor driven instrument console is slim and lightweight,
contributing to the bike’s elegant lines. - Large-faced speedometer features an easy-to-read LCD display that
includes a fuel gauge and warning lamps.
Frame
- Triangulated swingarm design with hidden single-shock gives the rear
of the bike the look of a custom rigid. - Ultra-low seat height contributes the Vulcan 2000’s sleek lines.
- Locking rear seat uses a stylishly thin seating pad, contributing to
the bike’s flowing lines.
Wheels & Tyres
- Newly designed cast alloy wheels feature a dynamically flowing design.
These attractive high-quality wheels complement the Vulcan 2000’s overall
luxury look and feel. - Super-fat rear tyre enhances the bike’s macho appeal and visually
expresses the engine’s impressive power output.
CONFIDENT HANDLING AND LUXURIOUS RIDE QUALITY
Frame
- The steel double-cradle frame uses a cast steering head mated to a
large-diameter, box-section backbone. - A 32° rake and 10 mm fork offset deliver very balanced handling
characteristics, making the Vulcan 2000 both highly manoeuvrable at low
speeds and very stable on the highway. - Steel pipe swingarm features a truss structure for high stiffness.
Suspension
- Massive 49 mm fork tubes ensure excellent steering feedback and
contribute heavily to the Vulcan 2000’s good-mannered steering. - Very low-speed handling is light and free of understeer. At speed on
the highway the front end delivers an unsurpassed feeling of trustworthiness
and stability. - Direct-action single rear shock, adjustable for both preload and
rebound damping, is discreetly hidden under the seat and delivers a smooth,
comfortable ride.
Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
- Dual 300 mm front brake discs are operated by 4-piston callipers for
powerful braking. - Slowing the rear wheel is a large-diameter 320 mm disc operated by a
twin-piston calliper. - Radial tyres contribute to stable handling.
Ergonomics
- Ultra-low seat height of 690 mm makes it easy for riders to reach the
ground with their feet. - The combination of wide handlebars and an ideal relationship between
seat, bars and footboards results in wonderfully comfortable riding
position. - Ergonomically designed front bucket seat is very comfortable.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Engine
- Cylinder heads use a large 35° valve angle, helping to realise a short
cylinder head layout (intake valve diameter: 40 mm; exhaust: 36 mm). - Hydraulic valve lash adjusters are located on the rocker arms, and
high-quality SKD tappet material is used for low weight and high durability. - Plated cylinders are long wearing and offer excellent heat dispersion.
The coolant jacket extends only part way down the cylinders, giving the
cylinders an attractively tapered shape with a small cylinder base area.
Finning matching that of the cylinder heads is both aesthetically pleasing
and functional. - Piston-cooling oil jets are used to keep piston temperature under
control. - Lightweight alloy-steel connecting rods contribute to low vibration
levels. - The crankshaft uses huge 220 mm flywheels to enhance torque feel at
low rpm. - A damper on the left end of the crankshaft dampens large torque
fluctuations and reduces shock loads on the primary drive and transmission. - Chain primary drive (HV) eliminates gear noise and transmits a great
V-Twin pulse feel to the rider. - Cable-actuated clutch offers superb feel at the lever. Mounting the
clutch on the left side of the engine gives the engine a classic V-Twin
shape. - ECU control items include: injection timing/volume, sub-throttle,
ignition timing, radiator fan, decompression, starter motor, and fuel pump. - Dual oil pumps are used, one in the crankcase and one in the clutch
case, each with its own scavenging pump. - High-output, large-diameter 226 mm AC generator is mounted inboard on
the crank journal, and contributes to flywheel mass. - Large one-piece engine cases house the eleven shafts including the
cams. The oil and water pumps are built into the cases, reducing the number
of parts. The cases are rigidly mounted in the frame, making the engine a
stressed member and increasing chassis rigidity. - Semi-dry sump design eliminates external oil lines and isolates engine
oil from the crank wheels to prevent windage loss. - All engine covers are 2- or 3-step construction, and the chromed
transmission cover doubles as an oil accumulation tank. - Compact air cleaner with attractive chrome cover is located between
the cylinders. - Starting is easy, thanks to an automatic decompressor operated by
electric solenoid. - Honeycomb catalysers in the mufflers reduce exhaust emissions, while
twin balance pipes enhance exhaust efficiency. - An automatic fast idle setting ensures quick starts, even on cold
mornings.
Chassis
- Large tapered roller bearings are used in the steering head for high
stability and high chassis rigidity. - The use of castings around the steering head and forged parts around
the swingarm pivot results in a clean design, with less welding and very
high rigidity.
Other
- Ignition switch allows on-position key removal, preventing key bunches
from damaging the top of the headlight nacelle’s lustrous chrome finish
while the bike is in operation. Turning the ignition switch collar to the
“off” or the “park” position (illuminating the tail lamp) turns the engine
off and necessitates re-insertion of the key to restart. - Self-cancelling turn signals.
- The Vulcan 2000 is conveniently designed to allow the oil level to be
checked while sitting on the bike using a dipstick attached to the oil cap. - Convenient helmet lock located on the left side.
- A variety of optional accessories will allow customers to customise
the Vulcan 2000 to suit their personalities and riding styles. Windshields
(in a variety of sizes), a backrest with rack, thicker rear seat, passenger
footboards, side bags, engine guards, and a light bar are just some of the
options being planned.

MODEL CONCEPT
Ultimate Supersport! Kawasaki storms into the litre-class with the
uncompromising new Ninja ZX-10R, the machine everyone has been waiting for –
everyone except the competition. Boasting a category-leading power-to-weight
ratio, an awesomely powerful engine loaded with advanced technology and
style evocative of the world of MotoGP, the new Ninja ZX-10R is the
definitive expression of Kawasaki’s supersport DNA.
Unlike most other Kawasaki machines, the Ninja ZX-10R design started with
chassis simulations. The engineers wanted an extremely lightweight and
compact chassis that would offer superb handling and stability. The
combination of a short wheelbase with a long swingarm is a configuration
also seen on the Ninja ZX-RR. An all-aluminium frame with 600-class
dimensions mated to a long and highly rigid gull swingarm gives the ZX-10R
category-leading handling performance on track and twisty roads.
No less impressive, the powerful and incredibly compact new In-Line Four is
a showcase of advanced supersport technology. A number of considerations
were made to avoid compromising the desired chassis dimensions; use of a
one-piece cylinder/crankcase, a compact rear-mounted generator and “stacked”
transmission kept the high-spec power unit lightweight and compact. Other
engine features include a new fuel injection system, a close-ratio
transmission with a back-torque limiter clutch, and magnesium engine
covers – all of which contribute to the bike’s design aim of being the No. 1
machine on the track.
Those sitting on the ZX-10R for the first time will be amazed that despite
its compact size and race-purpose ergonomics, it is by no means cramped.
Thanks to an idealised seat/pegs/handlebar relationship and a concave tank
top, which allows the rider to mould himself to the bike, the 10R puts the
rider in a position to take full advantage of the engine’s awesome power and
the superb chassis response.
The Ninja ZX-10R’s key features can be summarised as follows:
- Best Power-to-Weight Ratio in its Class – Unbeatable combination of
high power, brilliant throttle response and low exhaust emissions from a
liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16-valve, In-Line Four featuring a sophisticated
automotive-style fuel injection system with 43 mm throttle bodies, dual
throttle valves and fine-atomising injectors. Light weight care of an
incredibly compact engine package, and a compact all-aluminium frame. Newly
designed lightweight wheels also contribute to weight savings that result in
a litre-class machine with the weight and dimensions of a 600. - Race-Oriented Performance – The combination of a short wheelbase with
a long swingarm gives the ZX-10R incredibly nimble handling performance. The
concave tank top and an idealised relationship between pegs, handlebars and
seat, creates an aggressive, compact riding position. Close-ratio
transmission, back torque limiter, radial mount callipers, petal disc brakes
and fully adjustable suspension are also all designed with the sole purpose
of racing in mind. - Aggressive Styling – Visually expressive of Kawasaki’s supersport DNA,
the ZX-10R’s flowing, edge-driven lines express the machine’s amazing
performance and unsurpassed power-to-weight ratio.
Engine
- Liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16-valve, 998 cm3 engine has a bore and stroke of
76 x 55 mm. - Huge 43 mm throttle bodies fitted with dual throttle valves ensure
massive power output and a smooth, step-free torque curve. - Automotive-type fine-atomising injectors improve performance, fuel
economy and emissions. While fuel spray from conventional injectors has a
droplet size of 120 microns, the fine atomising injectors have a droplet
size of approximately 70 microns. - Flow analysis used to develop idealised dimensions for intake and
exhaust ports, ensuring efficient cylinder filling and high power output
(intake/exhaust valve diameters: 31/25.5 mm, stem diameter: 4.5 mm). - Hotter spark of the iridium plugs and high-voltage coils improves
combustion efficiency. - Camshaft lobes and tappet surfaces feature soft-nitriding surface
treatment for long wear and high-rpm reliability. - Sintered aluminium valve spring retainers reduce reciprocating weight
for reliable valve control at high-rpm. - Forged pistons are lightweight and very tough, for low reciprocating
weight and high heat resistance. Their flat tops enable a compact combustion
chamber with improved combustion efficiency. Compression ratio is 12.5:1. - Plated cylinders are long wearing and offer excellent heat dispersion.
Passageways in cylinders improve crankcase breathing and reduce pumping
loss. - Intake air is routed via the central Ram Air duct and through the
frame tubes to the airbox. A duct between the frame and the air cleaner
prevents ingress of water. - Compact air cleaner fits snugly between the frame rails, allowing use
of a seamless, high-capacity, flat-bottomed fuel tank. Flow analysis was
also used to ensure efficient air flow inside the airbox. - Butterfly valve located in the cast titanium collector of the exhaust
system ensures smooth, linear power delivery at all rpm. - One-piece cylinder/crankcase design, compact rear-mounted generator,
compact cylinder head and “stacked” tri-axis transmission/crankshaft layout
allows an amazingly compact and lightweight engine, permitting the
crankshaft location to be idealised and the bike’s centre of gravity to be
lowered, thereby contributing to the bike’s highly responsive handling
characteristics. The engine is short enough to fit below the twin beams of
the frame, allowing the 10R to have the narrow compactness of a 600-class
machine. - Single valve springs use oval-section wire to realise short springs
and a compact cylinder head design. - Camshafts are machined from forged billets of SCM420K steel for light
weight and high strength. - Lightweight magnesium engine covers contribute to the engine’s low
weight. - Newly designed liquid-cooled oil cooler with internal aluminium
finning is lightweight and keeps oil temperatures under control. - All-titanium exhaust system and oval-section muffler with titanium
internals and a 1 mm thick aluminium cover designed for light weight.
Chassis
- The all-aluminium twin-beam frame is a composite structure of castings
and pressings. Lightweight and very compact, it features a short wheelbase
and a long swingarm. - The frame’s thin walled die castings are a mere 2.5 mm thick for
maximum strength with minimum weight. - Use of a cast cross pipe results in fewer parts and less welding.
- Frame rails run over the engine to give it a width on par with current
600-class bikes. - Front fork features many aluminium internal components to reduce
weight. - Lightening holes in the top triple clamp contribute to the machine’s
overall light weight. - Forged aluminium handlebars are gun-drilled for light weight.
- Other lightweight chassis components include dual aluminium steering
stem nuts, lightweight pop nuts for the bodywork and aluminium
rear-suspension bearing arm sleeves and wheel side collars.
Wheels
- Lightweight new front and rear wheels feature “H” cross-section
spokes. The unique, 6-spoke design permits use of thinner rims, for
significant weight savings. * Wheels are significantly lighter than those
used on the ZX-9R.
RACE-ORIENTED PERFORMANCE
Engine
- Close-ratio 6-speed transmission designed to give the 10R impressive
performance on the racetrack and on twisting roads. - Adjustable back torque limiter fitted to the clutch helps prevent
wheel hop under rapid deceleration. - Sloshing analysis was used to develop baffles for the oil pan for
better performance under heavy braking. A sub oil pan helps reduce windage
by keeping the oil location low, and also helps lower the oil temperature.
Frame
- Like the ZX-RR, the 10R chassis minimises the distance between the
steering stem and swingarm pivot to create a compact, responsive package. - Massive braced swingarm delivers the rigidity needed for a machine
with the ZX-10R’s horsepower. Long swingarm design reduces the engine’s
leverage on the rear suspension, for excellent suspension action and superb
road holding qualities. - Specially configured for high torsional rigidity and more flexible lateral
rigidity, this “balanced flex” contributes significantly to the 10R’s
brilliant handling qualities. - Amazingly lightweight, the swingarm weighs about the same as the ZX-6R
swingarm.
Ergonomics
- The 10R’s riding position was developed based on computer simulation
and exhaustive rider feedback. - Thanks to the narrow width of the frame rails, which run over the
engine, the rear of the tank could be made very narrow, allowing the rider
to grip the bike with his legs. - Because the air cleaner is flush with the top of the frame rails, the
fuel tank bottom can be made flat, significantly increasing fuel tank
capacity without increasing overall tank size. - The top surface of the fuel tank is concave, making it easier to tuck
in behind the fairing and increasing rider comfort during high-performance
riding. - An ideal relationship between pegs, seat and handlebars result in a
naturally aggressive riding position.
Brakes
- The Ninja ZX-10R is the first supersport bike to feature petal brake
discs. This unique disc shape improves cooling and helps prevent disc warp.
It is also lighter than conventional discs. - Front discs are 300 mm. Radial 4-pot opposed piston callipers deliver
impressive stopping performance with excellent feel at the lever. - The lightweight 220 mm rear petal disc is operated by a lightweight
single-piston calliper.
Suspension
- Highly rigid 43 mm inverted fork is fully adjustable and features
settings that are biased towards track riding. - Both front and rear suspension are fitted with top-out springs for
stable suspension performance. Because the top-out springs regulate
suspension elongation, the rider will also experience less nose dive feel
under heavy braking after hard acceleration, as well as greater stability
when getting back on the gas after hard braking. - Linkage-equipped rear gas shock with reservoir is fully adjustable.
- Lightweight aluminium suspension linkage reduces chassis weight and
contributes to the responsive rear suspension action. - Rear ride height is shim-adjustable.

- Responsive Z1000-based liquid-cooled engine with efficient 4-valve,
DOHC cylinder head displaces 748 cc from a bore and stroke of 68.4 x 50.9
mm. - Z1000-based cylinder head features re-shaped intake and exhaust ports,
a modified combustion chamber and adjusted valve pitch to suit the reduced
bore size. - The class’s only electronic fuel injection system delivers brilliant
throttle response across a wide, smooth powerband. - 34 mm throttle bodies with dual throttle valves and automotive-style
fine-atomising injectors deliver instant cold starting, excellent power
characteristics and good fuel consumption. - 4-into-1 stainless-steel exhaust system mates to a stylish
oval-section muffler. - Header pipes #1 and #4, and #2 and #3 are joined to give smooth throttle
response at all rpm. - Large, Z1000 radiator eliminates the need for an oil cooler, resulting
in a more compact, cleaner engine package. Quiet-running ZX-12R-type ring
fan helps reduce noise. - Smooth-shifting 6-speed transmission has a gear for every situation,
from low-speed city traffic to high-speed highway use.
RIDER-RESPONSIVE HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS
Chassis
- The Z750’s stable handling qualities also come from the Z1000,
although the frame’s stiffness balance has been modified to suit the 750
engine and to deliver lightweight, responsive handling characteristics
across a broad range of riding applications.2 - Stiff, box-section swingarm helps to reduce chassis flex and
contributes to the bike’s excellent road-holding qualities.
Front Suspension
- Sturdy 41 mm fork delivers a supple ride and gives excellent steering
feedback across the speed range.
Rear Suspension
- Linkage-equipped rear gas shock features 4-way rebound damping and
7-way preload adjustability for a smooth ride and excellent road holding
qualities. - Lightweight aluminium suspension linkage reduces chassis weight and
contributes to the responsive rear suspension action.
Brakes
- Dual 300 mm front discs operated by twin-pot callipers deliver
confidence-inspiring stopping performance in town and on the highway. - The lightweight 220 mm rear disc is operated by a lightweight
single-pot calliper.
RELAXED RIDING POSITION
Ergonomics
- Natural riding position makes it easier for riders to reach the ground
with their feet. - This confidence-inspiring quality will prove especially popular with
intermediate riders and ladies. - An ideal relationship between pegs, seat and handlebars gives a
spacious and relaxed riding position that helps reduce fatigue, even on long
highway rides. - Elegantly waisted rear tank section makes it easy for riders to grip
the bike with their knees.
Bodywork
- Horizontal ducts on either side of the cowl create an “air curtain”
which reduces wind buffeting at higher speeds and improves rider comfort.
This patented feature is available only from Kawasaki.
