Yamaha’s Doug Henry rode an impressive race at last night’s AMA Red Bull Supermoto race in Irwindale, California. World Supermoto competitor Jürgen Künzel (KTM) dominated the first half of the race, managing to build an impressive gap over second-place Henry. But when a crash cut Künzel’s lead to almost nothing, a reinvigorated Henry used his MX skills to take the lead in the dirt section and never looked back.
Mike Metzger (Honda) was extremely impressive in his charge through the pack from an 11th-place start. Metz worked his way past series front-runner Jeff Ward (Honda) to take fifth behind Ben Carlson (KTM), and a short-time later the two riders inherited third and fourth places when Honda’s Ben Bostrom went down in the same corner that caught him out in his heat race. Metz chased Carlson down and eventually took third with a beautiful MX-style pass exiting the dirt section. Carlson crashed seconds later, possibly during an attempt to respond to Metzger’s pass, but managed to hold on to the fourth spot. Bostrom came home in fifth.
